Community Outreach and Educational Workshops on Mental Health and Nature

Oklahoma Institute of Prairie Psychology - Advancing mental health through research, clinical excellence, and community engagement since 1998.

Bridging the Gap: Taking Prairie Psychology to the People

The Oklahoma Institute of Prairie Psychology is founded on the belief that mental health resources and nature connection should be accessible to all, not just those who can attend intensive therapy. Our Community Outreach Division is tasked with demystifying psychology, destigmatizing help-seeking, and providing simple, effective tools for wellness rooted in our ecological philosophy. We tailor our workshops and presentations to diverse audiences, from kindergarteners to corporate executives, always with the goal of planting seeds of awareness.

Key Outreach Program Offerings

For K-12 Schools: "The Resilient Classroom"
We offer in-school workshops and teacher trainings. For students, sessions might include "Breathing with the Prairie Wind" mindfulness exercises, emotion identification games using animal and plant metaphors, and short guided explorations of schoolyard nature. For teachers, we provide strategies for creating calmer classroom environments, using nature breaks to reset student focus, and recognizing signs of stress and anxiety in pupils.

For Businesses & Organizations: "Cultivating Workplace Well-Being"
Corporate burnout is a public health issue. Our half-day or full-day retreats for teams, held either on our campus or at a nearby natural area, focus on stress resilience, communication, and creative problem-solving through nature-based activities. We also offer keynote speeches on topics like "The Neuroscience of Nature Breaks for Productivity" and "Building Resilient Teams: Lessons from the Prairie Ecosystem."

For the General Public: "Prairie Wisdom for Daily Life" Series
These are low-cost, monthly weekend workshops open to anyone. Topics rotate and include: "Introduction to Mindfulness in Nature," "Gardening for Mental Health," "Nature Journaling for Stress Reduction," and "Talking to Children about Climate Feelings." These sessions are educational and skill-based, not group therapy, and serve as a low-barrier entry point to our philosophy.

For Healthcare Professionals: "Continuing Education in Ecotherapy"
We provide accredited CEU workshops for psychologists, social workers, and counselors interested in integrating nature-based approaches into their practice. These are practical, evidence-based trainings covering ethics, safety, and specific interventions.

Partnerships and Public Advocacy

We actively partner with parks departments, libraries, museums, and public health agencies to co-create events like "First Day Hikes for Mental Health" or "Storytime in the Park." Our staff also engages in public advocacy, speaking at city council meetings about the mental health benefits of green space preservation and accessibility, and consulting on the design of therapeutic landscapes for hospitals and community centers. By meeting people where they are—in schools, workplaces, and public venues—we work to shift the cultural narrative around mental health from one of isolated pathology to one of holistic, community-supported, and ecologically-informed wellness. Our outreach ensures the principles of prairie psychology ripple outwards, fostering a region that values its mental health as deeply as it values its iconic landscape.
